Choosing Family Dental Insurance

Families have many expenses to worry about. They have hefty food bills, many additional expenses that single people don’t have to handle and will usually be required to follow a very strict budget. That is all the more true today than ever before.

Unfortunately many people are seeing the benefits they receive through their employers being reduced. This often means they lose vision, dental and other coverage that had once been part of their health insurance package. This can be particularly devastating to families with children, since they always require dental care and frequently need some vision services as well.

So, where can these families turn to for low cost dental plans? They could contact their health insurance company to inquire about dental care coverage, but they might be better served by also looking into an affordable dental plan through a discount dental plan provider.

Unlike the insurance companies, a discount dental plan will ask for a low cost annual membership fee in exchange for immediate access to a pre-approved network of dental professionals. Some families might immediately think that this means no pediatric dentists or no orthodontists, but they would be wrong.

Most of the US discount dental health plans have tens of thousands of dentists serving their customers, and most make a wide range of specialty services available as well. This could mean the traditional cleaning and x-rays as well as braces, crowns or oral surgery. It also means that these enhanced services are not at their usual premium prices, but at a significant discount available only to the member of the discount dental plan.

How is this better than family dental insurance? Consider that a family dental insurance policy asks for a high annual premium, does not pay the full cost of any procedure but only a percentage, demands pre-approvals on most treatment, places a maximum coverage amount on the total annual coverage it provides, and enforces a waiting period before any major procedures or treatments can be performed. This is not of any benefit to a family with children who cannot wait for a cavity to get filled or a broken tooth to be repaired. What this actually implies is that while a family waits six months or more for their coverage (that they are paying for) to kick in, they may have to pay for costly treatments or procedures entirely out of their pocket.

Let’s face it; most families cannot afford that kind of insurance plan. The low cost dental plans allow members to use their providers on the very day they sign their membership contracts. This means that a cavity or broken tooth will be handled immediately. It also means that treatment could be provided right in town or anywhere the family might be. For instance Florida dental coverage would be the same as hometown coverage, and if the family needed services on a vacation they could access them with no penalties and no loss of benefits. A traditional family dental insurance policy would not usually provide access to care outside of their established coverage area.
