Dental Plans for Seniors
As we age, our overall as well as oral health becomes all the more important to our quality of life. No one wants the stress and added financial strain, as well as added pain and time taken out of our busy lives necessary to address failing dental health. This is why all care
dental plans are increasingly important for seniors without current coverage.
With time comes significant damage and weakening of tooth enamel, decay, and needed repairs to existing dental work. Dentures, crowns, bridges and root canals can cost thousands of dollars without the proper
dental plans in place to help cover the costs.
Most major insurance companies will now offer
dental plans specifically tailored to senior citizens and their needs. Common procedures are discounted more deeply than those such as braces or tooth removal for senior plans.
Perhaps most important is maintaining coverage for regular dental checkups and cleanings. These appointments will include x-rays that will detect problems before they arise, allowing them to be addressed and remedied without costing thousands of dollars. This part of your senior health plan should never be neglected – it will cost you!
Many insurance companies now offer special plans for seniors eligible for Medicare coverage. Although Medicare and your supplement insurance do not cover regular dental expenses, it is relatively easy to find a low-cost all care
dental plan to maintain your natural smile as long as humanly possible.
These
dental plans may include HMO or PPO plans, either of which will cover much-needed dentist visits when you do not have an employer-supplied plan. There are some differences between the two types to be aware of, however. Depending upon which plan you enroll in, your choices in dentists may be affected.
HMO plans will require that you use preferred dentists in order to take full advantage of the available discounts and reduced rates. These plans usually offer co-pays for regular checkups and cleanings, and a smaller deductible for major services like fillings, crowns and dentures.
PPO plans will offer some type of discount on services no matter where you visit your dentist. However, choosing a professional that is part of the network for that plan will give you greater discounts on most services.
If you already have a preferred dentist, a PPO plan may be best if you do not want to search for a new provider. However, if you determine that costs will be greatly reduced by enrolling in one of the many HMO dental plans available, this may be worth the switch.
Your new insurance company will have available a list of preferred and in-network dentists to choose from. Call the friendly customer service representatives with any concerns or questions about coverage and estimated costs for your proposed plan.
You may also want to simply ask your dentist about which
dental plans he or she participates in and accepts at the office. This will give you a good starting point for contacts in the insurance industry, and continue on the road to great dental health during your golden years!
