How to Compare Dental Insurance Policies

If you are self-employed or recently changed jobs and are faced with choosing and searching for a new all care dental plan, there are a few considerations to keep in mind when comparing dental insurance. These policies are not created equally, and should not be considered as such.

Self-employed individuals seem to have endless choices in dental coverage plans, and this process can become very stressful and confusing. However, keeping a few points in mind can simplify this experience and help to find a new policy that serves your needs the best.

Begin by speaking to your health insurance company and asking if they offer dental insurance. Purchasing both policies through the same company may offer you unexpected discounts that will make the entire process of enrolling much easier.

Keep in mind that finding the best policy for your family’s needs is more important than saving a ton of money on premiums. The premiums you pay are fully tax deductible at the end of the year.

In addition, if you participate in an HSA-approved medical plan, you can use your HSA to pay for your out-of-pocket dental expenses as well. All contributions to this special savings account, up to a certain limit, are 100% tax deductible on an annual basis. You will never “lose” this money, and can use it for any health-related expense.

Employer-provided plans may seem much less expensive and accessible for only a few pre-tax dollars every week. However, most places of employment will offer several different options in all care dental plans.

In addition, each year you may have the opportunity to compare dental insurance and switch to a different plan if you so choose. Life-changing events such as the birth of a child, marriage or divorce will also present a chance to choose different types of coverage.

One option in an all care dental plan is called an HMO. These plans require that you visit an in-network dentist in order to utilize your coverage. If you do not have a regular dentist and costs seem to be lower, this option may be best for you. Simply ask the insurance company for a list of local preferred dentists in your area.

Other options include PPO plans, which allow you to choose any dentist you wish. If your chosen dentist is preferred, you will receive greater discounts on most services. Other dentists will be covered under the plan, but your out-of-pocket expenses may be higher.

If your employer offers a reimbursement plan, this may be an option for you if you do not have a family and are willing to risk major expenses. However, traditional options are usually best when considering lowering your exposure to unexpected dental expenses.

Don’t forget to consider the several choices in deductibles, maximum out-of-pocket limits, and co-insurance levels when you compare dental insurance. Every policy is created differently, and you must consider your personal dental care needs in order to choose the best plan for you.
