Understanding and Finding a Dental Insurance Quote

Shopping for new dental insurance can seem like a daunting task. There are literally hundreds of choices available for coverage options, limits, deductibles and premiums, and every applicant should fully understand these aspects in order to fairly compare proposed all care dental plans.

Not every dental plan is created equally. There are a few simple terms to become familiar with in order to understand what all those numbers mean that the insurance company is throwing your way!

Unfortunately, many consumers become jaded by premium amounts and do not pay very close attention to other aspects of the policy. Premiums must be affordable, yes, but cheaper is not always better. Many find out too late that they get exactly what they pay for – unless you know what to look for in your dental insurance quote.

Most of us are familiar with deductibles and how they contribute to our out of pocket expenses for dental care. However, deductibles are not the only measure to determine what your maximum costs may total in a year. Higher deductibles usually mean lower premiums, and vice versa.

You must also pay attention to maximum out of pocket limits for each policy; you may find that two comparable plans in cost are very different in this aspect! This information needs to be discovered before you ever have a major dental emergency or occurrence and are surprised by an exorbitant bill!

Also ensure your dental insurance quote offers a list of exclusions and limitations. These are customary for every policy, but will differ somewhat. Pay special attention to lifetime limits. These amounts are the total benefits that each person covered is entitled to, no matter how long you hold the policy. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Don’t fret – most insured will never meet these limits. A common exclusion is cosmetic procedures such as porcelain veneers or whitening services. When these are pursued due to aesthetic preferences only, they will not be covered under almost any policy.

Ensure your dental insurance quote does not include exclusions for services which you expect to encounter. This may include braces, oral surgery, fillings or crowns. Some policies may seem like a great deal, but will only cover preventive cleanings and checkups; make sure it covers everything you may come across in the future!

Choices in dentists may also change between different types of plans. HMO and PPO plans are the most popular choices. HMO plans require that you use certain dentists in order to be covered, and PPO plans allow you to go anywhere you choose; your discounts may be less with an out-of-network dentist, however.

Finally, ensure your dental insurance quote is actually for insurance. As silly as this advice may seem, many dental discount services can be very convincing in sounding like legitimate insurance companies.

These services can greatly reduce your costs, but benefits are limited. There is no deductible, only agreed-upon reduced pricing with participating dentists. Often, these discount plans are just as expensive or very near the cost of an all care dental plan.
